A Brief History

The Lewis P. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Brooks DiBona |
January, 1987
The Department of Languages and Literature opened a newly designed Language Resource Center. This facility permitted an increase in the quality of basic language instruction in the University by promoting access to workbook tapes, equipment, and PC's with foreign language word processing. The LRC primarily served language students.
Summer, 1987
To prevent the LRC from becoming a victim of insufficient funding and to help maintain the new laboratory at a high level of quality, a $5.00 per quarter lab fee was imposed on all students enrolled in first and second year language courses.
Summer, 1991
The College of Humanities was awarded funding for the creation of a Macintosh instructional computing lab in the Language Resource Center. Installation was completed in the fall.
Autumn, 1996
The Language Resource Center installed a second PC lab.
Autumn, 1998
The University converted to the semester system. The lab fee was raised to $7.50 per semester - an increase of only $2.50 per student per year. A second Macintosh instructional computing lab was installed.
Summer, 1999
Lewis and Elizabeth DiBona bequeathed $600,000 to the Language Resource Center. To honor them, the LRC was renamed the Lewis P. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Brooks DiBona Center for Educational Technology in the College of Humanities.
