Lab Fees (who pays them and what they are used for)

All students enrolled in first and second year language courses are charged a special course fee. Special Course Service Fees are fees or charges that are imposed to offset unfunded costs associated with special educational services and courses. Income from Special Course Fees is restricted to specific course costs and may not be used to augment general categories of departmental budgets, i.e., supplies and equipment, travel, salaries or computing costs, and may not be deposited into development accounts.

Special Course Fees may be approved for consumable instructional materials, use of specialized facilities (including language labs), and instructional materials. (see http://www.admin.utah.edu/ppmanual/3/3-8.html)

The fee money is used to purchase what Department of Language and Literature instructors need to facilitate or augment their courses. This includes special equipment, books, tapes, CD's, software, movies, magazines, newspapers, etc. Equipment purchased with course fee money may be borrowed only by Department of Languages and Literature instructors. Everything purchased with fee money remains the property of the University DiBona Center for Educational Technology.
